Begg's Magic run

She is not in one of the final-day features but there will still be plenty of eyes trained upon the unbeaten Victorian filly Magic Time when she has her final run as a three-year-old at Randwick this Saturday.

Unbeaten in three starts – the last two of them at stakes level – Magic Time has continued to impress her trainer Grahame Begg to the point that he remains uncertain as to what trip will ultimately best suit the daughter of Hellbent.

“What I’ve really taken out of her runs, is just how strong she is to the line,” Begg said.

“She is actually so strong through the line. Every run she’s had she’s so strong. She’s been brilliant at 1200 and 1400 metres and there is no reason why she can’t run a mile, but we know that until the spring.

“More than likely, she’ll have another break after next Saturday and then go into her spring four-year-old career with just four starts. It’ll be very exciting.”

Magic Time will have her final run for the season in Saturday’s Group 3 James Carr Stakes (1400m) at Randwick.

Bred and retained by Milburn Creek Stud after she failed to meet her reserve at the Gold Coast Magic Millions sale, Magic Time began her racing career in October when a five-length maiden winner at Pakenham (1200m) before she went to Flemington to beat open two-year-olds in the listed Amanda Elliott (1400m).

Produced first-up on the opening day of The Championships, Magic Time ran clear for a convincing win in the G3 P.J. Bell Stakes (1200m).

Begg said connections were happy to take their time with the filly.

“We didn’t rush her early,” he said. “We gave her plenty of time. She was ready to run in early September and we backed off a bit and waited until October and November.

“They don’t often win listed races at their second start beating the colts, so that was a big plus that she’s well above average.”
